A suburban Chicago man died Sunday night after falling through the ice during a game of hockey with his son.

Fire officials said the man ? identified as Patrick Rorig, 47, a custom home builder in Johnsburg, northwest of Chicago ? fell through the 2-inch ice on the pond behind his house and was underwater for 31 minutes.

McHenry Township fire officers got the call for a water rescue about 6:14 p.m. (7:14 p.m. ET) and found Rorig about 10 feet from where he went under. He was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Rorig's son, who wasn't immediately identified, was able to get off the ice in time.?

Authorities described the rescue as a dangerous one.

"They immediately went onto the ice and started searching the hole where he fell in," Battalion Chief Mike Majercik told NBC station WMAQ of Chicago.?

"In the immediate area around him, the ice was breaking," Majercik said. "Ultimately, we ended up putting a diver under the water, and that's when we recovered the person."

A rescue worker said that because this winter has been so mild ? the temperature at the time was 29 degrees ? that people were advised to stay off the ice.?

Rorig is the second person this month to die after falling through ice in McHenry County. The body Justin Ribar, 29, an ice fisherman from Wonder Lake, was recovered from Pistakee Lake ?on Feb. 3.

I walked with my hostage through the doors, knife still ready to draw plasma and iron. "I will have no part of your disgusting fantasies, I know full well you laced my food and drink with an aphrodisiac." His pulse became louder as I spoke, "so why did you kill him? Do you enjoy sending loyal workers to their demise?"?
?? Instead of staying silent he chuckled and spat out pure poison. "Oh Raven I admire your spirit, but this charade will get you nowhere, as we both know you can't kill me here and live. As for killing your squad... I needed them out of the way. With your, unique talents, it would be such a shame to waste such a pretty face. I need airs to my families inheritance and you would be a fitting wife."?
?? I pressed the knife harder to a vital artery as we stepped out into the courtyard. "keep talking and it won't end well for you, regardless of my position!" What he spoke was indeed true, I couldn't kill him here, I'd barely make the first incision upon his neck, but if I died here I'd be sure to send him to hell with me.?
?? Once again he laughed. "What now raven? What, will you do... If my guards on the ground don't get you, then the guards in the towers will. And even if you do miraculously manage to get away, these grounds are patrolled by many more guards."
?? Looking around he was right, everywhere I looked, guards and weapons were aimed at me. I had jumped from the frying pan, and into the hellish fire. Then I heard a rumble of what sounded like an old and battered engine. My guess was correct as an old black car smashed through the front gate, diverting everyone's attention to itself. The car drove over many guards while it swerved, everyone opening fire upon the vehicle as it stopped neatly in front of me. A door flung open and the driver cried to me. "get in!"?
?? His lordship even looked astounded, but I soon shook it off, threw him at the guards behind me and made a desperate leap inside, closing the door before the constant gunfire could injure me. The driver floored it, driving out the same way they came hitting many guards once again.?
?? When I finally registered what had happened, I glanced around at the two people inside the violently jumpy car. The first person I noticed was a young man with long dark unkempt hair, strangely similar to the recently deceased crow. "Who are you?" I asked, voice laced with concern for my position once again.?
?? "No need to be defensive," he smiled warmly as if in understanding of my feelings, "my name Is CC, and it's a pleasure to meet you Raven, or eve if you want to be informal." I lowered my defence slightly, "how do you know who I am?" my voice wavered ever so slightly. He gestured to the driver who extended a shadowy arm to me. "Wonderful to finally meet your acquaintance, Raven, we have been watching you for awhile, and have a very interesting proposition for you."
?? For the first time in the past two weeks, I genuinely smiled and shook the hand, despite my unsure circumstances. "The pleasure is all mine, and please call me eve..."
?? Back at the scene I had left behind his lordship rose from where I had tossed him aside, assisted by his many henchmen. "God damn that unholy vixen!" he spat as he surveyed the damage caused by my rescue party. Many guards lay flattened upon the driveway, blood present in more than a few areas. He picked up the knife that I had pressed against his throat and glared at it as if it was myself.?
?? "Mark my words Raven, you will regret the day you made an attempt upon my life. When we next meet, you shall be mine!"
